HSE People is proud to be working with a team of Champions to raise the profile of the HSE industry and to support our members. Today we speak with Mel Henaughan, a self-employed H&S Consultant and trainer.
What is your job title, where do you work and what do you do?
I am a self-employed H&S Consultant and trainer mainly working within the construction sector but with other clients in industrial sectors.
How did you get started in HSE?
When working for Ever Ready Batteries in Telford I was tasked with putting COSHH procedures in place back in 1988. From that point onwards my responsibilities in H&S developed. I started implementing risk assessments and training other workers. IOSH / NEBOSH qualifications followed and I became full-time in H&S.
Why did you want to become an HSE People Champion?
To give back something to the next generation and to pass on some of the knowledge and experience I have accumulated over the years.
Who or what inspires you?
Trying to get people involved in safety and have them realise that it’s not boring or nerdy, but is actually a way of running a more productive and profitable business.
What are you excited about for 2023?
I’m concerned over the possible ramifications of the Brexit Freedoms Bill on current UK H&S legislation on such a tight timescale.
If you could have a superpower what would it be?
Hindsight !
Describe yourself in three words.
Never Give Up
Great answers Mel! We’re looking forward to finding out more about you.
