October’s edition of SafeTech will focus on lone worker and workplace safety solutions.
The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) define lone working as ‘people who work by themselves without close or direct supervision’. If an employee cannot be seen or heard by a fellow colleague then they are considered a lone worker.
It is estimated that up to 8 million people in the United Kingdom are lone workers. That’s 22% of the 31.2m UK working population. The NHS alone employs up to 100,000 healthcare professionals (9% of its workforce) who work on their own every day. Since the pandemic, more and more people are working from home which also means their health, safety and wellbeing needs to be monitored and supported.
Those working in an environment where there are other colleagues around are still at risk from environmental factors, dangerous emissions, noise damage and much more.
